Item Kindergarten Readiness Longitudinal Study(2008-01) Blunk, ElizabethAt this point data have been collected at both the Bonham Early Childhood Center (BECC) and the Tx State Child Development Center (CDC). The Early Childhood Environment Rating scale has been administered at both the CDC and BECC on a total of nine classrooms. Data have been collected for the Child Observation Scale on 33 children at the CDC. Data have been collected for the Caregiver Interaction Scale for four teachers at the CDC and seven teachers at Bonham. The Bonham checklist has been used to gather data on the child's academic progress at Bonham and on 15 children at the CDC. Next week, data will be collected on another preschool classroom at the CDC. Data have been collected on a total sample of 60 children.Item Preschool Children’s Peer Conflict and Related Teacher Management Strategies(2004-01) Russell, Elizabeth Morgan; Blunk, ElizabethTeachers are asking for help in managing young children's peer conflict. There is an urgent need in the early care and education community for more information about conflict management because teachers have reported that preventing and responding to peer conflict, particularly physical conflict, is one of the most difficult aspects of teaching young children. This aspect of teaching contributes to teacher burnout and subsequent staff turnover, both of which have a deleterious impact on the quality of care and education experienced by the children. Additionally, young children need to learn ways of solving their disagreements in verbal, prosocial ways rather than by hurting each other. Solving conflict in a socially responsible manner is a life skill that children can build upon throughout their childhood and beyond. However, there are gaps in the research literature which prevent teachers and those who educate teachers from building a complete and accurate understanding of the dynamics of young children's peer conflicts which, in turn, inhibits the identification of related, effective teacher management strategies.Item Preschool Teacher-Child Relationships(2006-06) Blunk, ElizabethThe project, Preschool Teacher-Child Relationships, is intended to determine the influence of teachers’ interpersonal relationship and on interactions with preschool children in their care. This project has received an extension through August, but preliminary progress will be reported. To date, we have collected complete data on 28 teachers in childcare programs. We have conducted Adult Attachment Interviews that yield an interpersonal relationship template; the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale that assesses teachers perceptions of how conflictual, close, or overly dependent their relationships are with individual children; and conducted classroom observations utilizing the Caregiver Interaction Scale to determine positive interactions, punitiveness, permissiveness, and detachment. Transcriptions of the AAI have been completed on 23 subjects and 10 subjects have been coded to determine teacher attachment status by a certified AAI analyst. Data on all other measures have been entered and will be analyzed using SPSS once 30 subjects are interviewed, observed and all AAI are complete. We have received permission from the Texas State Child Development Center to interview two teachers to complete our data set.
