Abstract
Alternative sanctions such as probation and parole are quite common today. For
this reason, there is a great deal of research concerning most aspects of community
supervision. However, what is conspicuously lacking from the literature is information
about those offenders who fail to complete their term of supervision because they
abscond. Absconders warrant further study because their behavior undermines the
credibility of the criminal justice system and poses a threat to public safety. The present
study was conducted to test the validity of a popular risk assessment instrument for the prediction of absconding among adult probationers in Travis County, Texas. Although
the instrument was able to correctly classify absconders with some degree of success, the
results were less than optimal. The results of the analysis are discussed, and avenues for
future research are suggested.
