Humanistic Sandtray Therapy: Theoretical Underpinnings and Practical Applications
(© World Association of Sand Therapy Professionals, 2023-07-01) Foster, Ryan D.
Multiple models of sand therapies have emerged since Margaret Lowenfeld (2007) first described her world technique. Although sandplay has an identifiable theoretical rationale and system for its application based on Dora Kalff’s (1980) original description, the same cannot be said for sandtray therapy approaches. In this article, I review humanistic sandtray therapy, a model grounded in person-centered and Gestalt theories and unique in its purposeful implementation of attitudes, skills, and techniques associated with humanistic approaches.

Sand Therapy Competencies: A Qualitative Investigation of Competencies for Sand Therapy Practitioners
(© World Association of Sand Therapy Professionals, 2023-05-01) Hartwig, Elizabeth; Homeyer, Linda E.; Stone, Jessica
As the practice of sand therapy grows and flourishes, the need for the identification of competencies of sand therapy practitioners is imperative. The purpose of this study was to identify sand therapy competencies (STC) in four categories: knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional engagement. Using qualitative research design with a purposive sample, the researchers used an initial, open-ended, and researcher-developed STC survey and the additional process of member checking to determine a final list of competencies for sand therapy practitioners. Outcomes identified a total of 33 competencies with 15 knowledge, 7 skills, 7 attitudes, and 4 professional engagement competencies. These findings provide a framework of competencies with which sand therapy training programs, professional organizations, and credentialing standards should be aligned. Future research on the acquisition of sand therapy competencies and research with more diverse samples is indicated.

(© World Association of Sand Therapy Professionals, 2023-04-01) Fraser, Theresa
This article reviews the symptoms of grief and complicated grief that can be reported or observed by therapists as well as the importance of therapists addressing these grief experiences first in their own lives before witnessing and supporting the grief journey of others. The Sandtray Worldplay © (De Domenico, 2002) method of witnessing a sandtray will be reviewed and integrated with stages of grief walking. Grief walking is defined as the mutual experience of processing grief by witness and builder but is unique given the builder is leading the journey. A review of healing tools for sandtray grief walking is discussed.

Adlerian Applications of Sandtray Play Therapy
(© World Association of Sand Therapy Professionals, 2023-03-01) Kottman, Terry
Adlerian applications of sandtray play therapy is one strategy used by play therapists who practice Adlerian play therapy. Adlerians use a plethora of different kinds of sand trays: spontaneous, non-directed, semi-directed, directed, quasi-directed, therapist-created, and co-created trays with child, adolescents, and adult clients, as well as with families and in parent and teacher consultation. While there is a general guideline of 7 steps in Adlerian sand tray play therapy sessions, therapists can use their own creativity and flexibility to adjust this process based on the needs of individual clients and their treatment plan for working with them. Adlerian play therapists use sandtray therapy in all four phases of therapy: building the relationship, exploring clients' lifestyles, helping clients gain insight into their lifestyles, and reorienting/re-educating clients by facilitating changes in behavior, emotions, and cognitions.

Editor’s Commentary: Happy Birthday, Margaret Lowenfeld!
(© World Association of Sand Therapy Professionals, 2023-02-01) Homeyer, Linda E.
February is a special month for sand therapy therapists. February bookends the life and death of Margaret Lowenfeld (February 4, 1890 – February 2, 1973). All our models, approaches, and uses of sand therapy find their way back to her. Based on many of her own life and professional experiences, Dr. Lowenfeld began with curiosity about finding a way for children to share their worlds to facilitate emotional and psychological health. Much like Eliana Gil, in her article in this issue, Dr. Lowenfeld sought to find entry points to understand clients.
