Abstract

The stated goal of the proposal, to create a site-specific sculptural installation titled Genius Loci: Villa, was successfully accomplished. The PI created the sculpture from thousands of individual plant specimens that were cast into bronze with the assistance of 3 students using a unique method developed for this project. The bronze elements were permanently assembled into a matrix according to specific design strategies that underlie the architectural plans of the museum building for which the work was created. The artwork is a geographic portrait that hybridizes the essential qualities of both the architecture and the landscape of the Laguna Gloria site. It is currently installed at Austin Museum of Art.
