Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the perceptions of violence among children and youth. Specific goals included determining how children and youth perceive violence, whether they believe it is an acceptable retaliatory tool, and whether they themselves utilize violence and how. Participants were required to complete age-appropriate scenarios involving conflicts between children and youth. They were asked to resolve the conflict. Their solutions provided insight into the problem-solving tools the children and youth would utilize and whether violence was a part of the solution. Where possible, focus groups were also conducted with the participants to gain a more in-depth understanding of their thought processes.
