Abstract

A striking characteristic of the modern US military is its increased reliance on women, an unplanned consequence of the draft's demise. Currently, American women serve their country in unprecedented ways and numbers. No other industrialized nation has ever used women as extensively. As peacetime soldiers, they are unlike their historical sisters who were called to meet the challenge of war.
