The USDA Food Plate Website: Culturally Conscious or Colorblind?

Abstract

A critical discourse analysis of webpages on the USDA's choosemyplate.gov website reveals a lack of sensitivity cultural ways of eating besides Anglo American ways of approaching diet. Food and culture are indelibly interwoven, so the implications for the USDA's exclusion of other cultural approaches to eating are significant to the multicultural audiences in the U.S. The relationship between food, identity, and Asians, Latinos, and people of African Heritage are explored in their paper. The critical discourse analysis and the significance of its findings are also relayed.
