Series Title: Videorecordings

Creator: Freddy Powers

Collection #: 2009-066

Language: English

In 2006 singer/songwriter Freddy Powers was honored by the Texas Heritage Songwriters Association, which noted in his Hall of Fame award: “Freddy Powers may not be as famous as his powerful pals Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Willie Nelson, but his award winning hit songs and production work are behind-the-scenes testaments to his talent and success.”

Many of Powers’ songs have been recorded by Merle Haggard, and his career includes BMI #1 Song awards for: “I Always Get Lucky With You," “Let's Chase Each Other Around The Room Tonight,” “Friend in California,” and “A Place To Fall Apart.”

In 2009 Freddy Powers donated a substantial archive to the Wittliff Collections as part of the Texas Heritage Songwriters' Association Collection, received in conjunction with the Center for Texas Music History.

Scope and Contents

Recordings of the Rogers & Hammerhead show, on Umatic, VHS, and audiocassette, which aired on the Austin Music Network in 1996-1997. Rogers & Hammerhead are the stage names of Randy Willis and Freddy Powers, who emcee each show. Bill McDavid appears on many shows, doing the introduction and closing words. The Rogers & Hammerhead show aimed to bring attention to songwriters, whose songs were recorded and made famous by various musicians, though the songwriters themselves may be not as well known. Shows generally include discussion of songs, songwriters’ careers, and performances by the songwriter, with Willis and Powers joining in occasionally. Performers include Bobbie and Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard, who appears on his own show and with Floyd Tillman. The tape “Freddy Powers and more” includes an Austin City Limits logo, Willie Nelson “Don’t Mess with Texas” ad, and Jerry Jeff Walker ad for clean Austin Parks. Dates are included, though it’s sometimes unclear if it was the recording date or the air date. Some song titles are included, though it’s not a complete set list.

Items organized alphabetically by performer. Color bars and blank tape has been edited out of the beginning and end of the digital files. Aired recordings, listed as “Television Broadcast,” can be accessed on the institutional repository at https://digital.library.txstate.edu/handle/10877/7218 , or by clicking the link at the tape number below.
