Abstract

The Argentine rock was influenced by the turbulent political life that took place during its first twenty years. Nevertheless, its musicians were not identified with any political tendency and their philosophy was based on the ideas of freedom and peace. The political leaders censored their music and the artists suffered persecutions, threats, and even exile. In this work, we study the evolution of the rock nacional and its passage from being part of the underground culture to belonging to the official culture thanks to a coherent attitude that was maintained even in the most difficult moments of the Argentine history. This made them become one of the few reliable referents, not only for the youth, but also for the rest of the society. This was the main reason that the rock nacional became part of the official culture before the democracy returned in 1983.
