Research Enhancement Program Final Report
I applied for a research development grant to be used in the summer of 2007 for a research trip to Harvard University's Widener Library and to devote time to writing upon my return. Harvard's holdings include a rare periodical collection published in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Access to Harvard's collection with REP funding allowed me to complete the last element of research needed for my manuscript, A Living Museum: Race, Reform and Tradition in Bahia, Brazil, (my earlier tentative title was “Limits to Reform: Race, Identity, and Ideology in Bahia, Brazil”). I analyzed the periodical, a medical gazette, during my time at Harvard and returned to write a completely new sixty-page chapter based on this new research. This chapter is now the first in my manuscript and sets the background for the rest of the analysis. I had planned to submit the book manuscript for publication during the 2007-2008 academic year. I entered into contact with the University of North Carolina Press in the fall of 2007 and they in turn requested that I submit the full manuscript, which I did in February of 2008. The manuscript is now under consideration with their press. In sum the REP grant allowed me crucial research and writing time. Completion of this research and new writing in turn allowed me to fulfill my goals of submitting my book manuscript to an academic press over this past year.
