The core of this story is a biography of Dr. Cecil Eugene Evans (1871-1958) who was President of Southwest Texas State 1911-1942. However, it was impossible to present the life of this man with a true and accurate perspective apart from the whole stage, the cast of characters, and the drama in which he so effectively played his part. Therefore, this is also the story of the Teacher’s Colleges in Texas and the struggle to survive and thrive in the first half of the 20th century. The Author of this book, Tom Nichols, was secretary to President Evans and a member of the teaching faculty at Southwest Texas University for many years.
