Caenorhabditis elegans is a small round worm that can usually be found in the soil of temperate climates worldwide. It feeds on E. coli OP50; for the purpose of this study, we monitored these nematodes after they ingested probiotics, specifically B. longum, in a contamination free liquid media. The results show that when these worms consume B. longum, they stop growing at the L2 growth stage of the second generation, and they resume growing normally after adding E. coli OP50 into the media; perhaps, they required a specific metabolite chemicals provided in OP50. It has been further shown that they die when fed with L. casei as alternate food source to E. coli. The amounts of B. longum inside the worm’s gut shows that contained B. longum at numbers similar to human small intestine, with no OP50 detected.
