| dc.description.abstract | In fourth grade social studies, students are mandated by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to learn about the beginnings of Texas and within this, various tribes of American Indians. However, there are many issues surrounding the appropriateness of depictions of American Indians throughout history and today. By examining larger issues of stereotypical portrayals of American Indians in the media and bias in the Eurocentric school system of the United States, this thesis will shed insight on how these issues are manifesting in the curriculum and classrooms of Texas today. This thesis aims to help teachers critically analyze the Texas fourth grade social studies curriculum and the materials used to teach the curriculum. | |
