dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this research is to examine the Texas State University Honors College from the perspective of black students and faculty therein through the qualitative, ethnographic methodology of portraiture. Data were collected through interviews with six black students and four black professors who have participated in the Honors College at Texas State University, and a review of pertinent literature in the field of Honors and higher education was conducted. Emergent themes in this essay highlight the strengths of the Honors Program, analyze key differences between Honors and non-Honors students, identify the pressures faced by black Honors students and faculty, and propose potential strategies to increase the recruitment of black students into the Honors College. The findings of this research may have implications for prospective black Honors students, as well as Honors College faculty and administrators who are interested in black students’ perceptions of Honors programs and their recruitment and retention therein.
