dc.description.abstract | The commedia dell’arte stock character of Pulcinella found longevity as a puppet through the Punch and Judy tradition. From his origin in Naples, Punch was associated with urban workers. The longevity of the character provides an opportunity to view the ways in which the character changed between its birth in the early 17th century and the 20th century in response to the developing working class under the hand of various social groups. | |
